About Beck

Beck came to art later in life, starting with graphic design classes at 35. That foundation led her to writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel called “Brain Candy.” From there, she spent several years “painting” with seed beads and yarn before falling down the sequin rabbit hole. Her first piece was a styrofoam head covered with sequined fruits and flowers that she named “Eve.”

As a self-taught artist, Beck has created her own techniques for making sequined art. She was initially inspired by a mid-century craft where styrofoam ornaments were decorated with sequins and beads. Every piece starts as a custom sculpture crafted from wood and styrofoam. The artwork is coated and painted before she can start applying the sequins, which come in a variety of forms, from fabric to fringe and trim. Many of the unique fabrics she incorporates into her artwork come from thrifted prom and party dresses. These second-hand sequins get a new life as art that can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Beck works out of her home studio in Reno, Nevada, where the floor is always, always covered in sequins.
